Welcome

Project_1228

For almost 20 years locomotive 1228 had sat dormant on a siding in Greenfield, NH with a deteriorating body and an unknown future.

Now a group of motivated individuals have taken time out of their regular schedules to give their best shot at breathing life back into this once proud Boston and Maine workhorse.

About

ABOUT THE LOCOMOTIVE

1228 is an EMD SW-9 built in 1953.
She originally served on the Boston and Maine Railroad until the railroad was sold to Guilford Rail Systems.
While under Guilford, 1228 was re-lettered as Springfield Terminal # 1423. The number 1423 was retained right up to the locomotive being set on a siding in Greenfield, NH where she sat for nearly 20 years.
In the fall of 2019, MBRX moved her south to a siding where the project could begin to revive the locomotive without bothering the neighbors.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

We are a group of motivated individuals with various backgrounds coming together to breath life back into 1228.

The purpose of this project is to get 1228 pulling trains again rather than being cut up like many of her sisters. As the intent is for practicality, the men currently working on this project will favor modern improvements over authenticity.
This page was put together to both promote the project while also providing updates on work already completed.

Donate

Up to this point the crew working on 1228 have dedicated much of their own time, resources, and funds towards saving the locomotive, but are now asking for a little help.

If you are interested in seeing this project through, but cannot directly help, we would be grateful for any financial assistance you'd be willing to offer.
